Ductwork is the part of an air conditioning system that people notice only when it whistles, leaks or will not balance. It carries conditioned air from the air handling unit to the room and used air back, and its quality shows in noise and in how much of the fan's air arrives where it should.
Ducts are galvanised sheet steel or pre-insulated panel, built to the SMACNA construction class in the specification, which sets sheet gauge, joint type and reinforcement by pressure class. Duct running through a roof void or across a plant deck gains heat before the air reaches the room, so insulation thickness and cladding follow the specification, and the vapour barrier is sealed at every joint and hanger to stop condensation on the outside surface.
Fire and smoke dampers sit where ducts cross fire-rated walls and floors, follow NFPA 90A, and need their own access panels so they can be tested and reset. Where smoke control is specified, NFPA 92 applies, and that covers stair pressurisation and the fans that run it. Kitchen and toilet extract ducts carry their own requirements for material, fall and access, as the specification states.
Leakage testing proves the duct to the specified class before it is insulated or hidden above a ceiling. Dampers are function tested, and smoke control systems are tested to their specification. A ceiling closed over untested duct is the expensive way to find a leak. Sealing at joints, hangers and penetrations is checked on site.
