Boundary Walls & Retaining Structures

NLS Contractors builds boundary walls and retaining structures in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Khobar and across the Kingdom: reinforced concrete and block walls, precast panel walls, retaining walls, gates and fencing. Wind and earth pressure follow SBC 301, and handover includes wall drawings, material test records and as-builts.

A boundary wall is often the first thing built on a site and the last thing considered when pricing, yet it can run to hundreds of metres and decides how the site is secured and drained. Scope covers foundations, wall construction in reinforced concrete, block or precast panels, expansion joints, coping, finishes, and the gates and fencing set into the wall line.

The type is the engineer's choice and the offer prices the type the drawings show. Block walls with reinforced concrete columns and a ground beam are common for compounds and quick to set out. Precast panel walls are made in a factory and erected between posts or footings, which suits long runs and tight programmes. Cast-in-place reinforced concrete suits high walls and walls under heavy load.

Retaining walls hold back earth, so earth pressure and surcharge decide the section. Design follows SBC 301 for wind and earth pressure loads, and the base, stem, toe and heel are cast to the structural drawings. Drainage behind the wall, a drainage layer or weep holes with a collector, keeps water pressure off it, because retaining walls fail from trapped water more often than from the soil itself. Backfill goes in compacted layers, and only after the concrete has reached the strength the specification sets.

Finishes are plaster, paint, cladding or exposed concrete, as the specification states, and the offer lists the finish as its own BOQ line. Gates and fencing are steel or aluminium, swing or sliding, with posts set in the wall line. Gate automation, access control and CCTV are separate packages and are coordinated at the post positions so that conduits are cast in before the wall is finished.

To price a wall, send the site boundary plan with levels, the wall sections, the retaining wall design, the BOQ, the finish specification, the site city and the programme. The offer states its assumptions on ground conditions and backfill material. Handover documents are the wall drawings, the material test records and the as-builts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Block, precast or cast-in-place: which wall is right?+

It depends on height, length, loads and programme. Block suits standard compound walls, precast suits long runs and tight dates, and cast-in-place suits high or heavily loaded walls. The consultant's drawings decide, and the offer prices what they show.

Why do retaining walls need drainage behind them?+

Trapped water adds pressure the design may not allow for. A drainage layer or weep holes with a collector lets water out, so the wall carries earth pressure only.

Are gates and fencing included?+

They can be, as steel or aluminium gates and fencing set into the wall line. Gate automation, access control and CCTV are separate packages, coordinated at the post positions.
