Asphalt Paving Works
NLS Contractors lays asphalt in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Khobar and across the Kingdom: prime coat, tack coat, binder course and wearing course from a hot mix plant, placed by paver and rolled. Mixes follow Marshall ASTM D6927 or Superpave, and handover includes the mix design, core results and as-builts.
Asphalt paving is a sequence in which timing matters. A prime coat goes on the approved base, a tack coat goes between layers, and then the binder and wearing courses arrive from a hot mix plant, are placed by paver and are rolled while the mat is still inside its temperature window. The package covers the sequence for roads, junctions, car parks and compounds.
The authority approves the mix design before paving. Marshall design to ASTM D6927 is common, Superpave is specified on some roads, and the binder is chosen for Saudi pavement temperatures, with performance grading to AASHTO M 320. Hot summer surfaces and heavy trucks are the reason binder grade and aggregate quality are specified and not left to the plant.
Placing is a logistics exercise. The paver, the rollers and the haul trucks are sized to the width and the plant output so the paver does not stop, and a paver that stops leaves a mark in the surface. Joints and edges are formed to the specification, and temperature is taken on the truck and behind the paver. Night paving is used in summer, or on live roads where the traffic plan calls for it.
Proof comes after paving. Cores are cut to measure thickness and density against the mix design, and surface levels are surveyed. The results go into the handover file together with the mix design submission and the delivery records.
Asphalt is priced per square metre at a stated thickness, or per tonne laid. Width, number of layers, the condition of the base, haul distance from the plant, traffic management and night working all change the figure, so the offer states the basis it priced, because a rate per kilometre means little without them. Send the road drawings and cross-sections, the mix and binder specification, the BOQ quantities, the site city and any traffic restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Square metre or tonne: how is asphalt priced?+
Per square metre suits a fixed thickness over a clear area, and per tonne suits variable thickness measured as laid. The BOQ usually decides, and the offer states which basis it priced.
Why are cores cut after paving?+
To measure thickness and density against the mix design. Cores show whether the layers were laid to the thickness shown and compacted to the density specified, which the surface alone cannot show.
Can asphalt be laid in summer?+
Yes, with a mix and binder specified for local pavement temperatures, hauling within the temperature window, and night work where the traffic plan or the heat calls for it.
What does the offer assume about the base?+
That it is approved to level and density before paving starts. If an existing base needs repair or levelling, the offer states that as a separate item.
